FIRST TRIMESTER

  • Meet the Doctor, learn about NEST and decide which hospital you will deliver at

  • Review medical history and have a basic physical exam

  • You will be weighed, and your blood pressure checked

  • It is too early to hear the fetal heart rate

  • Dating ultrasound and blood work may be ordered if not already done

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April).

  • Visits are monthly

10-14 weeks

  • 10-14 weeks

  • You will be weighed and your blood pressure checked

  • We may try to listen for the fetal heart depending on how far along you are.

  • Blood work and urine tests to determine blood type, immunity to MMR and Varicella, STI screening (including HIV, Hep B, Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea), Anemia and thyroid function

  • We will review your dating Ultrasound and give you an Estimated Due Date. This due date will not change with future ultrasounds.

  • Nuchal Translucency and First Trimester Screen

  • If you have had a previous pregnancy with high blood pressure or signs of placental insufficiency (small baby, preeclampsia, SGA) you may be asked to start a low dose of Aspirin until 36 weeks to decrease the risk for this pregnancy.

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April)

  • Visits are monthly

SECOND TRIMESTER

  • 14-18 weeks

  • You will be weighed and your blood pressure checked

  • We will listen to your baby's heart rate

  • Your anatomical ultrasound should be scheduled ~18-20 weeks

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April)

  • Visits are monthly

18 - 22 weeks

  • 18-22 weeks

  • You will be weighed and your blood pressure checked

  • We will listen to your baby's heart rate

  • We will review your Anatomical Ultrasound. This is the last routine ultrasound, other ultrasounds will be ordered if medically necessary (i.e. high blood pressure, advanced maternal age (>35y), growth concerns etc..)

  • You may start to feel your baby move

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April)

  • Visits are monthly

22 - 26 weeks  

  • 22-26 weeks

  • You will be weighed, have your belly measured, and your blood pressure checked

  • We will listen to your baby's heart rate

  • Routine blood and urine test requisitions will be given at this visit (this includes the Diabetes screen). Please go for these tests around 26 weeks. If you go too early, we may not be able to interpret the results, You will likely be asked to repeat the tests... nobody wants to unnecessarily do the diabetes screen twice! Glucose Screening Test (non fasting)

  • BOOK LAB APPOINTMENT HERE

  • If your blood type is Rh negative or it is your first baby you will be given an extra requisition to retest for antibodies in your blood.

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April)

  • Visits are monthly

THIRD TRIMESTER

26 - 30 weeks

  • 26-30 weeks

  • You will be weighed, have your belly measured, and your blood pressure checked

  • We will listen to your baby's heart rate

  • Go for your routine labs (including diabetes screen) around 26 weeks

  • If you do not pass the glucose screening test you will be sent for the 2 hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. You must not eat or drink for at least 8 hours before this test. Call the lab to book this appointment CALL 403-770-5136

  • Around 28 weeks we start with FETAL KICK COUNTS. This should be done everyday until the baby delivers.

  • We will review your lab results as they come in. You will be notified if further testing is required or of critical results, otherwise results will be reviewed at your next routine visit.

  • If you are Rh negative you will likely need RhoGAM and will need to book an appointment at 28 weeks to receive this.

  • We will give you a prescription for your Pertussis Vaccine You require this once in EACH pregnancy.

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April). Can be done at the same time as Pertussis

  • Visits are monthly

  • If you didn’t get it last visit, we will give you a prescription for your Pertussis Vaccine You require this once in EACH pregnancy.

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April). Can be done at the same time as Pertussis Vaccine.

  • Visits are every 2 weeks

  • You should have your Pertussis Vaccine by now. You require this once in EACH pregnancy.

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April). Can be done at the same time as Pertussis Vaccine.

  • Visits are every 2 weeks

34 - 36 weeks

  • 34-36 weeks

  • You will be weighed, have your belly measured, and your blood pressure checked

  • We ask about fetal movement, listen to your baby's heart rate and feel for baby's position. If we are unsure of position an ultrasound will likely be ordered to confirm baby's position (ie. vertex (head down) vs breech). If the baby is breech we will talk to you about the option of an ECV or booked C-section

  • At 35+5 or after you will have your GBS swab

  • If you have a history of genital herpes preventative treatment should be started at 36 weeks until delivery. Please let us know of a history outbreaks for you or your partner.

  • Start packing your hospital bag (If you want it, Erin has a handout with suggestions on what to bring).

  • You should book an appointment with Public Health to obtain your Pertussis Vaccine if not already done

  • Flu Shot (once during influenza season (Nov-April)

  • Visits are every week from 36 weeks on

  • Please make sure you know how to get to Unit 31 Peter Lougheed Hospital. When you go to the hospital (for pregnancy related concerns), please go straight to Unit 31. Let the triage nurse know that you are a patient at NEST. Your chart will be there waiting for you :)

  • If there is concern regarding your health (ie high blood pressure) or the health of your pregnancy, an induction may be recommended. Click on the inductions link below for more information.

  • Visits are every week
